The United Kingdom (UK) government officially announced to sanction Chelsea FC owner Roman Abrahamovic. The step has been taken following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Chelsea’s owner is among the seven oligarchs to be hit with fresh sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans. His assets have been frozen, and he is barred from visiting the UK or conducting transactions with British individuals and businesses, the government said.
It also includes billionaires Igor Sechin and Oleg Deripaska. They are both seen as close allies of Vladimir Putin, the Russian President.
Roman Abrahamovic had already announced to sell Chelsea FC after nearly two decades of ownership. But do you know what does the Russian oligarch getting sanctioned means for Chelsea? Here’s what it means for the European champions:
With Roman Abramovich’s assets frozen, among other things Chelsea are no longer allowed to sell tickets or merchandise, offer new contracts and sign or sell players.
This means there will be no away fans permitted at Stamford Bridge for the foreseeable future.
