The federal government has decided to provide some relief to the low-income citizens with a new subsidy to provide cheap petrol following the recent hikes.
Eligible citizens such as motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars up to 800 CC will be provided Rs. 50-100 per liter subsidy on petrol.
The announcement was made following a meeting headed by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in provincial capital of Punjab.
PM directed the relevant authorities to take necessary steps for the smooth implementations of the scheme. Federal cabinet will receive the final proposal in 6 weeks.
The recent hike in petrol prices further increased the burden on low-income families. Petrol now costs Rs272.00 per liter.
What is the Eligibility Criteria to Receive Cheap Petrol Under the Subsidy?
The age limit has been set at 30 to 35.
The average monthly income should be Rs. 37,472.
The family should comprise of five members and be in social economic class C.
Who Can Receive Cheap Petrol Under the Subsidy?
The subsidy will apply to the owners of the following vehicles:
- Motorcycles
- Rickshaws
- Cars up to 800 CC
Who are the Blue-collar workers eligible for the scheme?
The blue-collar workers who can avail cheap petrol include mechanics, plumbers, electricians, government employees of mid- or lower-level ranks, and riders for ride-hailing services and food delivery apps such as Bykea, Foodpanda, etc.
Can the BISP Beneficiaries Avail Cheap Petrol?
Yes, the government has also made the beneficiaries eligible to receive subsidised petrol. Female beneficiaries of the programme have been identified as the poorest and most vulnerable through the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER).
Furthermore, government will also add another column in the BISP application form which will identify any other immediate family member who owns a motorcycle.
How to Register for the Cheap Petrol Scheme?
All the details of the citizen including their CNIC (with mobile number), name, and vehicle registration details are already present in the national database. The eligible citizens will be automatically registered using these details.
After the petrol subsidy is finally implemented, those eligible will receive a confirmation message of their eligibility.
Sending Message to Receive OTP
Once you have received the confirmation about your eligibility, you will have to send your CNIC number and receive One Time Password (OTP). The number to send your CNIC detail to hasn’t been shared yet.
After reaching the petrol station, you will be asked to provide the OTP along with your original CNIC. You details will be scanned and you will be provided with cheap petrol.
Government is currently working on a system, which will show your assigned limit and how much you’ve already consumed.
How Much Cheap Petrol Can You Receive ?
Consumers will be assigned different monthly quotas based on the kind of vehicle they have.
For Bikers
Bike owners will be eligible to receive 21 liters of petrol per month.
They can not receive more than 2-3 liters per day.
After they have reached their limit, they will have to pay the normal petrol price.
For Car Owners
Cars owners are eligible to receive 30 liters (or one full tank) of cheap petrol in a month.
They can get the 30 liters all at once or from time to time.
