While the committee approved the salary hike for parliamentarians, the pay of the National Assembly speaker and deputy speaker remains unchanged, as revisions to their salaries fall outside its jurisdiction.
They will continue receiving the same monthly amount, confirmed by the Speaker’s Office.
A proposal recommending that lawmakers’ salaries be adjusted to match those of federal secretaries was initially submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Following approval by the National Assembly’s Finance Committee, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq forwarded the recommendations to the premier.
Earlier, there were demands to increase MNAs and Senators’ salaries even further, but those proposals were reportedly turned down. However, the revised pay aligns their earnings with senior government officials.
Additionally, 67 opposition lawmakers from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had also formally requested a salary revision.
The Finance Committee further suggested extending federal secretary-level benefits to parliamentarians, ensuring they receive the same allowances and privileges.
