Although the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stated that Rauf’s injury is not severe, they are prioritizing caution. As a result, he will be sidelined for Pakistan’s next fixture against South Africa on February 12. Sources from ARY News suggest that while Rauf’s spot in the Champions Trophy squad is secure, Akif Javed is the top contender to replace him in the upcoming match.
The PCB had considered Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Mohammad Ali, but Akif’s impressive form in the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League has given him the edge.
The 24-year-old pacer finished the BPL with 20 wickets, tying for second-most in the tournament. His pace and ability to trouble seasoned batsmen make him a strong candidate to bolster Pakistan’s attack. However, he may need to compete with Faheem Ashraf for a place in the playing XI.
With Pakistan set to face an in-form South African side in a must-win match on February 12, Rauf’s absence—or his potential replacement—could play a pivotal role in determining the team’s success.
