The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide heatwave alert, forecasting a sharp spike in temperatures from April 13 to 18, with Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab expected to bear the brunt of the extreme weather.

According to the advisory, prevailing atmospheric pressure is likely to trigger a new spell of intense heat, with temperatures beginning to rise from Saturday. By April 14, the heatwave is expected to intensify, pushing daytime temperatures 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm.

The PMD has also warned of possible dust storms and gusty winds as a result of the rising heat. Citizens, especially the elderly, children, and women, have been urged to stay indoors during peak hours, avoid direct sun exposure, and stay well-hydrated.

Strong winds and heat-induced weather conditions may also damage infrastructure, including electric poles, trees, and solar panels, the department added.

In response to the alert, the Punjab government has activated its disaster management teams. On the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) convened a high-level meeting at the commissioner’s office in Bahawalpur to discuss emergency measures.

The meeting, chaired by PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia and Bahawalpur Commissioner Musarrat Jabeen, was attended by deputy commissioners and the managing director of the Cholistan Development Authority, among others.

DG Kathia said the PDMA has already dispatched 2,000 jerry cans and 10 water bowsers to Cholistan to address potential water shortages. Of these, four bowsers have a capacity of 12,500 litres, while six can carry up to 5,000 litres.

Umbrellas are also being distributed in vulnerable areas to shield people from the intense sun.

“All deputy commissioners have been directed to stay on high alert,” said Kathia, warning that the situation requires strict vigilance.

Officials from health, education, livestock, irrigation, agriculture, and local government departments have also been instructed to maintain close coordination to ensure a swift response to any emergency.
