The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce 102 electric buses in Rawalpindi as part of a major eco-friendly public transport initiative. The project, estimated to cost Rs7 billion, will span an 84-kilometer route and serve multiple areas of the city and its surroundings.
According to officials, the provincial government has already allocated Rs4.7 billion for the initiative, which aims to transform 10 major public transport routes. This project is expected to significantly reduce environmental pollution and provide residents with modern transportation options.
The electric buses will operate on routes connecting key locations such as Taxila, Wah Cantt, IJ Principal Road, and Octori 26, as well as Daultala to Rawalpindi.
State-of-the-art bus terminals will be constructed, including one at the old GTS bus depot in Chohard Choke and another on Adamjee Road in Rawalpindi Cantonment. Each terminal will be equipped with charging stations to support the fleet, with 40 electric chargers planned for installation.
This development follows Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s approval earlier this year to expand the project to 200 buses, a move aligned with Pakistan’s collaboration with China to combat pollution and promote sustainable transport. The service is expected to become operational next year.
