Punjab Government Changes Vehicle Registration Policy

The Punjab government has amended Section 24 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, now allowing vehicles to be registered in any district within the province. This reform removes the earlier requirement that tied vehicle registration to the owner’s permanent residential district.

Excise Director General Umar Sher Chattha highlighted that the changes aim to simplify the process and improve inter-district accessibility. The single registration series will remain in use, with additional features like online payments and digital registration cards enhancing convenience.

The Excise Department reported Rs30.453 billion in revenue for the first half of FY 2024-25, reflecting a 23% year-on-year increase.

In a related development, the Punjab government plans to prevent residents from registering vehicles in other provinces or Islamabad. The Excise Department, with Cabinet approval, will implement measures to address tax evasion and security concerns tied to this practice.

Punjab CNIC holders registering vehicles outside the province will face penalties. Efforts to control off-province registrations will leverage NADRA’s district codes.

Additionally, vehicles registered elsewhere will face fines during checks or when re-registered in Punjab. The Cabinet’s approval has set the stage for legislative action to enforce these measures.
