In a major step to tackle smog, the Punjab government successfully carried out a cloud seeding operation using local technology. The operation, which took place on Friday, caused artificial rainfall in Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang, according to the Provincial Meteorological Department.
Starting at 2 pm, the operation led to rainfall in the targeted areas within hours. Experts believe that similar measures could soon help reduce smog in Lahore.
The project was a joint effort between Pakistan’s Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Army Aviation, PARCO, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Punjab government. This collaboration shows the region’s focus on finding new ways to solve environmental problems.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the success of the operation, calling it a historic achievement and highlighting the potential of local technology.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb also supported the initiative, noting that unlike last year’s UAE-backed operation, this was entirely a local effort. The government sees this as an important step in dealing with the smog problem and proving Pakistan’s ability to find its own solutions to environmental issues.
