Authorities have intensified measures to curb overspeeding on motorways, with Punjab registering its first FIR against a driver for exceeding the speed limit on the M-4 motorway near Multan, an official confirmed on Thursday.

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) had previously warned motorists that FIRs would be lodged against those driving at speeds exceeding 150 km/h. Offenders would also face vehicle impoundment and legal action.

According to NHMP Spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, the first case was registered after a vehicle was caught traveling at 173 km/h on the M-4 motorway. The driver was arrested, and a case was filed at Badlah-e-Sant Police Station in Multan under charges of negligence and overspeeding.

Strict enforcement of speed limits aims to reduce accidents on Pakistan’s highways, where overspeeding and reckless driving frequently result in fatalities.

Recent incidents include a tragic bus accident on the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway, which claimed eight lives and injured 41 passengers.

Officials have reiterated that the crackdown on speeding violations will continue to enhance road safety and prevent further loss of life.
