Iran is reportedly exploring the option of acquiring JF-17 Block III fighter jets, a joint product of Pakistan and China. This development has surprised many, as it was widely anticipated that Iran would purchase Russia’s Su-35 fighter jets to modernise its air force.
The JF-17 Block III, developed by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation, stands out due to its advanced features. The aircraft is equipped with the KLJ-7A AESA radar, offering superior target detection and tracking capabilities.

It also includes electronic warfare systems, long-range missiles, and an upgraded flight control system. Its lightweight design and lower operational costs make it a cost-effective alternative to other fighter jets.
In contrast, Russia’s Su-35 is a twin-engine, heavy multirole fighter jet from the 4++ generation. Known for its exceptional manoeuvrability, the Su-35 features the Irbis-E radar with a detection range of up to 400 km, powerful AL-41F1S engines, and advanced electronic warfare systems.
However, delays in Su-35 production and technical support may have pushed Iran to consider alternatives like the JF-17.
Reports suggest that Iran is considering a hybrid fleet, combining the Su-35 with JF-17 Block III jets, to diversify its airpower. Tehran has also been in talks to locally produce advanced aircraft, including Su-30 and Su-35 models.
