The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced the closure of universities and colleges in Lahore and Multan due to the worsening smog conditions. An official notification stated that classes will shift online to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Schools across Punjab, excluding Murree, will also remain closed until November 24 as part of the government’s measures to address the hazardous air quality. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors, wear masks, and limit outdoor activities.
In addition, the Punjab government has enforced a three-day lockdown in Lahore and Multan on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to reduce pollution levels. Authorities are monitoring air quality daily and have warned that stricter restrictions may follow if the situation deteriorates further.
Construction work in both cities has also been halted for a week starting November 16.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasised the health risks posed by smog, warning that it poses dangers similar to COVID-19. Reports indicate that over 600,000 people in Punjab have experienced respiratory problems in the last week, with 65,000 hospitalised.
To combat the crisis, paramedic leave has been cancelled, hospital OPD hours extended, and Rescue 1122 services boosted. Businesses violating anti-smog measures are being sealed, and markets are required to close by 8 p.m. as part of ongoing efforts.
