The federal government has unveiled an initiative to provide 40,000 electric motorcycles at reduced prices to encourage eco-friendly travel and cut oil imports. Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain shared the plan during a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The program has been backed by a Rs. 4 billion subsidy to boost the adoption of electric two- and three-wheelers. To support this shift, 3,000 charging stations will be set up across the country.
Minister Hussain highlighted that this move will not only reduce pollution but also ease the nation’s financial burden caused by oil imports. He added that banks will offer affordable financing options to make e-bikes accessible to the public.
A special feature of the initiative includes the free distribution of 120 e-bikes to high-achieving students as a reward for their academic excellence. Additionally, the plan ensures that all women applicants will receive their e-bikes.
In Punjab, the Chief Minister Youth Initiative has increased its allocation of e-bikes, raising the total from 20,000 to 27,200. Orphaned students are being prioritised, and many have already received their bikes.
The Bank of Punjab has approved loans for 20,000 students to purchase e-bikes, with distributions continuing daily to meet the growing demand.
